The history of the Royal Mint is an extensive one. As surprising as it may sound, the mint is actually over a thousand years old. Its history can be pinpointed to circa 880 when Alfred the Great occupied the city. However, under Roman and Anglo-Saxon rule, the city itself operated several mints, meaning that in reality the mint is probably even older. The mint initially had a monopoly on creating coins, but circa 1540, Henry VIII ordered the closure of ecclesiastical mints during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This meant that the Royal Mint was the sole remaining mint in the land, thus solidifying its importance to the UK. It also enjoyed a period of minting medals, striking them for the troops at Waterloo in 1815.

The Royal Mint became a limited company in 2009 and is owned by Her Majesty’s Treasury. It is known as an icon of the UK, creating hundreds of millions of coins a year and accounting for 15% of the world’s coin based currency. It doesn’t just mint UK coins: it also strikes and circulates coins for other 60 other countries, and has undertaken export orders of currency since 1601. It also strikes a variety of collector’s coins, all of which are highly sought after by coin collectors.
