Uses of Precious Metals Series: Episode 5 – Gold in Nanotechnology

Gold in Nanotechnology

An increasing area of research is in that of nanotechnology, that is, technology on the nanoscopic scale.

For reference: 1 nanometre is 1 billionth of a metre.

Although no definite applications have yet been found, gold’s conductivity, thermal insulation properties and resistance to corrosion are likely to see it utilised more and more as the field of nanotechnology matures.

The most interesting thing to come from the meeting of nanotechnology and gold however, is the use of gold nanoparticles to deliver medicine, fight cancer and, contrary to golds natural properties, as a catalyst in chemical reactions.
