Canada is a nation of 35 million people and a land between two oceans. A modern and highly developed country that is rich in minerals, gold being one of them. Canada had been under British rule since 1763 and its' gold was governed by the British Royal mint until 1931 when it gained independence. Barrack Gold (Canada) is the world's largest gold producer. For the last 200 years the "country of mining" has seen many gold rushes, from the Quebec mines in the early 1800's to the Klondike in the 1890's up to 30,000 prospectors tried to make their fortunes here. Ontario has five major mines and produces approximately 50% of Canada's gold with Quebec next at 25%. It is ranked 4th in the world's gold producing countries.

The gold Maple Leaf coin was made the official gold bullion coin of Canada in 1979 keeping the Royal Canadian Mint busy. It was and still is so popular that a one-off 100kgs replica was minted, to sell around $2.75 million. After receiving more orders for this coin it is now in regular production. The Canada mint is the first mint to refine a coin of 999.9 fineness.
