Baird & Co. was founded by Tony Baird in 1967. Over the years it has grown to become the biggest gold refiner in the UK. Originally dealing only in numismatic coins, Baird & Co. grew and over the years started to offer other products including jewellery and bullion.

Awards
Baird & Co. created their website in 1996, making it the first of its kind in the industry and one of the first dynamic websites in the UK. In fact, their website was launched two years before Google, at the dawn of the internet.
In 2000, Baird & Co. become an official member of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). This added credibility to the brand and opened opportunities for the business.
From 2011 to 2013, Baird & Co. won a series of awards: being ranked in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100, Top Track 250 and Profit Track 100, which rank the fastest-growing private businesses in the UK. In the same period, Baird and Co. also featured in the Real Business Hot 100.
Baird & Co. released the first commercially available rhodium bullion bar in 2012. Later, in 2018, the company partnered with Tuvalu to create the world’s first legal tender rhodium coin, known as the Tuvalu South Sea Dragon.
In 2016, Baird & Co. became an official distributor for The Royal Mint. Shortly after, in 2018, the company won the Queen’s Enterprise Award.

Refining
Since opening its first refinery in 1979, Baird & Co. has become the largest gold refiner in the UK. It has established an international reputation for quality and professionalism.
Their refinery recycles scrap metal, collecting it and then melting it in the furnaces. The next stage is to add chlorine to the molten metal, creating metal chlorides. Aqua Regia is then added, resulting in .9999 pure gold. The last step is to melt all the grains into coins or bars.
One of the key steps in the refining process is ensuring the quality and purity of the precious metal bars. Baird & Co. test the quality of their bullion through sampling and then assaying.
Innovations
Baird & Co. is regarded as one of the most innovative precious metals refiners in the world. They are known for their cutting edge production techniques, resulting in high-quality bullion. They also use methods to boost the efficiency of their refining, which not only saves the company money but helps improve their environmental friendliness.
In addition to their innovative production processes, Baird & Co. have been leading the way in bullion production. Baird & Co. was the first company in the world to produce commercially available rhodium investment bars in 2012. Rhodium bars were not new, but they were previously only available to the industrial and scientific fields.
In 2018, Baird & Co. worked with Tuvalu and started production of the first legal tender rhodium coin, the Tuvalu South Sea Dragon. The coin has a legal (face) value of $100, though the market price is around $19,000, as of the time of writing.
